Climate
The climatic trend in 2015 was extremely regular and over the seasons respected the typical behavior of the Chianti Classico area.
The cold and relatively dry winter preceded a spring characterized by a humid climate in the months of March and April and dry in those of May and June;
in this period the temperatures were regular, ensuring perfect vegetative development and an excellent flowering and fruit set phase of the grapes.
The summer was hot, with a peak in July, with excellent temperature variations between day and night which guaranteed
the growth of the bunches without particular stress conditions.
The month of August, which was also hot, was characterized by some rainfall which favored the optimal start of ripening.
The harvest took place between the end of September and the beginning of October.
The Cabernet Franc harvest took place from 28 to 30 September, continued with the Sangiovese from 29 September to 3 October and then ended with the Cabernet Sauvignon
from 4th to 10th October.
Vinification
The 2015 harvest, regular in its course, will be remembered for the harvest of completely healthy and ripe grapes,
thanks to very favorable climatic conditions throughout the season.
Despite this, the attention was very high, both in the vineyard and during the harvest and winemaking operations.
Upon arrival in the cellar, the grapes were delicately de-stemmed and the berries, before being pressed,
carefully selected at the sorting table; here the attention to detail has ensured that in the winemaking tanks
truncated cones of 60 hl only the perfect grapes could enter.
During fermentation and maceration the musts are slowly transformed into wine;
extreme care is required at this stage to maintain freshness and aromas,
without neglecting the extraction of color and tannin management aimed at sweetness and elegance.
Once the skins and the wine were separated, the malolactic fermentation was started which, in barriques, enhanced the finesse and pleasantness of the wine.
The aging process takes place in new French oak barrels for about 18 months.
During this period the different lots, vinified separately according to the variety and viticultural variables, are raised in wood,
to then join a few months before bottling.
Notes from the winemaker
The 2015 harvest is to be considered one of the best ever due to its ideal climatic trend in all seasons,
culminating with the harvest period which allowed the grapes to ripen perfectly.
The extreme attention during winemaking and a careful choice of woods for aging has ensured the achievement of a wine with undisputed potential,
with an excellent balance and a great personality.
Historical data
Solaia is a vineyard of about 20 hectares facing south-west between 350 and 400 meters above sea level. on a rocky limestone soil with alberese and galestro rock,
located at Tenuta Tignanello. The Antinori family produced this wine for the first time with the 1978 vintage;
the initial blend was 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, which was repeated in 1979.
In the following years a 20% Sangiovese was introduced and some corrections were made in the relationship between Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc,
up to the current composition. Solaia is only produced in exceptional vintages and was not produced in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1992.
Tasting notes
Solaia 2015 has a very intense ruby red color with violet reflections.
Excellent expression and aromatic complexity: intense notes of plum jam and ripe dark fruit such as blackberry, blueberry and black currant stand out on the nose.
The evident aromas of chocolate and licorice are perfectly integrated, leaving room on the finish for a sensation of mint capable of giving the bouquet a pleasant freshness.
On the palate the wine is harmonious, with an excellent and balanced structure; the roundness and sweetness of the tannins make it compact,
elegant, with an extremely long finish and a very persistent spicy aftertaste.
